South Chicago

Ian Manire

This project illustrates Ian Manire’s proposal for the redevelopment of the 600-acre former site of the United States Steel Company’s South Works, which includes more than three miles of waterfront, and which closed and was cleared in 1992 and remains vacant to this day. The proposed development would extend the existing neighborhood’s network of streets and blocks; provides sites for several civic and recreational buildings; and includes a continuous lakefront park in the context of a low-to-mid-rise neighborhood for 40,000 residents. The neighborhood is served by three commuter rail stops on a north-south line located roughly parallel to and approximately ¾ mile west of the easternmost edge of the proposed new neighborhood.
